How to Find a Lost Cat ?

Losing your cat can be terrifying and heartbreaking and because cats are small and master at hiding, it can take weeks and even months to find them. Cats intentionally do not leave their territory, be it an indoor cat or outdoor. However, accidents happen, and unlike dogs, it is difficult to find cats if they are lost; they always hide in silence in an abandoned area.

How to Find a Lost Cat

Cats that are friendly and playful, would approach people and get rescued. With cats that are nervous and fearful, it can be very difficult to find them. They can hide for weeks finally before they get hungry and desperate to approach strangers for food. Skittish cats do not respond even if they hear you calling.

So, if you are looking for answers on how to find a lost cat or how to find a lost cat in your house or outdoor, here are some steps that you can take.

Steps to be Taken to Find a Lost Cat

Before taking steps to find your lost cat, make sure that your cat is lost. If you do not see your feline friend for long, it might be hiding in places like closets, cupboards, under the furniture, or upholstery. Once you are sure that your kitty is missing, take the following steps:
  • Thoroughly search around your property. They may hide in nook and corners.
  • Search the neighborhood. Cats usually do not go a few houses away. But they hide in secluded places which makes it challenging to find them. Knock your neighbors’ doors and ask them if they have seen your cat. If not, ask them to look at their home’s spots where a cat could usually hide. Also, ask them to let you search their yard.
  • It is best to find a cat at night. They are likely to show up when it is quiet. Look for the reflection of its eyes in trees and bushes with the help of a flashlight.
  • Make it easy for the cat to return home. Keep the door or windows open that your cat usually uses for going out and getting in. Place its bedding and food near the door or windows.
  • Set a trap for your cat. Place the trap according to instructions and put food and water near the trigger. As the cat steps on the trigger to get food, the door of the trap shuts. Make a trail of aromatic foods leading to the trap.
  • If your cat has a microchip, contact the microchip company. They might help you locate your cat.
  • Make fliers and give to your neighbors and post them on poles in your neighborhood.
  • Do not forget to check your local shelter at least twice a week.
  • Make sure you check the online sources as well.
  • Do not give up.
Bottom Line:

Unlike dogs, it is rare for cats that they return home fast. So waiting for them for a few days thinking that your kitty might return home itself is a mistake. Take enough steps to find your cat and never give up too quickly.
